A complete wardrobe needs the essential “Uniform”. The uniform is what makes you most comfortable, what you feel the best in and what you usually gravitate towards buying. When you find yourself justifying buying pretty much the same stuff by the self gratifying notion that it’s a “necessity”, ” classic” or “needed”, those items are probably part of your uniform. When you find yourself justifying the siltiest difference in the same pieces those too are part of your uniform.

The uniform is classic, timeless (if tweaked properly) not forced or trying to hard. You wont have to think when putting on your uniform, you wont have to fuss and though it may be simple it’s your salvation from clothing ruts.

lets face it as women we really have complicated this whole getting dressed thing. There are so manny silhouettes, types, colors, prints and just confusing things out there we wear.

Borrow it from the boys who have somehow found the timeless solution to getting dressed “re make the same staples and let the times dictate the slight tweaks”. Men don’t have 15 bizzilon different types of t-shirts they have maybe 3, men don’t have 20 thousand different types of jeans they maybe have 3-4. Men have been buying the same staple peaces in different fabrics, colors and textures for forever, why cant we?

So embrace the uniform and go out and buy some more of the same crap!!!

Beauty Is In The Eye of the Beholder

Yesterday I spent a significant amount of time watching videos about body image, starting with Dove’s latest Real Beauty campaign addition. In this spot Dove has employed the services of a FBI Forensic artist to draw some women from behind a curtain based on their descriptions of themselves. The twist comes when these same women are described to the artist by complete strangers they have just met while awaiting their turn to be drawn. As the commercial proceeds the women are then revealed to the artist where they see two drawings. One which was drawn to the specifications they gave the artist about themselves and the other based on the descriptions of the strangers. Each of the drawings are vastly different. The way most of the women described themselves was not at all how they were viewed by the stranger. Which led to the question, “Are you beautiful in yours eyes?” A rather poignant and deep hitting inquiry if you ask me. So many people in general are burdened by the thoughts that they are not beautiful enough according to the strict standards of beauty that have been set by society. Each of the women ranging in age and race, down played their beauty. In their eyes they are not what beautiful can be. It had me thinking how many times I have battled with this same issue. How often I have looked in a mirror and not liked what I saw. For years I would wish on stars and look for lit candles all in hopes I could look like something other than what I saw staring back at me. Growing up in a community where no one looked like me and my appearance was often a topic of conversation led me to have self-esteem issues well into my teen years. The thoughts riddling my mind were those screaming endlessly, “If your hair was different” “if your shape were different” “if your eyes were another color” the constant berating of myself left me sad.

I was moved by this video. Touched by Dove’s ability to tap into the psyche of so many women and urge them to look at themselves and see the beauty others see. I am so glad that I am now in a place where I more often than not enjoy what I see walking past windows and sometimes even check out my reflection to say, “Hey girl, you look good today!” The saying goes, self-love is the most important and how true it is. How deep is the love of self that it can save you from enduring hurtful experiences and allowing the insecurity settle in.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder they say but what has not been told is that the most important beholder is you. The person whose opinion matters the most is yours. How you feel about you is so critical to living a life of joy and happiness. Such a shame that it is typical for women to covet the body and face of another because she cannot find the beauty within herself. Myriads of women walk this planet just hoping they wake up looking different. I am proud of Dove for encouraging women who embrace who they are. To see the beauty in themselves that others see. For too long have women been held hostage by their unyielding desire to not be who they are.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Behold yourself, behold and see the gorgeous that is you. Behold and love who you have been created to be. The brown of your skin, the bright blonde of your hair, the freckles that dot your face take hold of those intracacies and be proud. You are you and you alone. And who she is, is beautiful.
